Der DM8806 ist ein voll integrierter Fast Ethernet Switch-Controller für normalen und erweiterten Temperaturbereich mit fünf 10/100Mb PHY, fünf 10/100Mb MAC plus einem 10/100/1000Mb MAC, und einer MII/GMII-Schnittstellenoption für einen 6. MAC.
Der Controller bietet grundlegende Layer-2-Switch-Funktionen und erweitertes IEEE 802.1Q VLAN, Priority Queuing, IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet, IGMP snooping und Spanning Tree protocol.
Alle Ports unterstützen FX, nur die Ports 0 und 1 unterstützen LFP/FEF. Für den Fiber-Modus wird ein EEPROM benötigt. Es wird nur PTPv1 boundary clock unterstützt.
Die integrierten PHYs sind konform mit den IEEE 802.3u Standards. Die MII/GMII-Schnittstelle bietet die Möglichkeit zum flexiblen  Anschluss von 10/100/1000Mb PHYs.
Im Mode 2A (unterschiedliche Pinbelegung zu Mode 3) können der GMAC und das GMII Interface benutzt werden. Details dazu im separaten Datenblatt zu Mode 2A und der Einführung zum DM8806.
Das Standard EVB des DM8806 ist auf Mode 3 konfiguriert.
