Block Diagam DM9161A
The DM9161A is a physical-layer single chip low power transceiver for 10Base-T, 100Base-TX and 100FX operations. It supports HP´s Auto MDI-X technology. Patch and cross cables can automatically be twisted/untwisted. The identical PHY Core is also being used in the MAC/PHY Controllers DM9000A and DM9010.
It provides a strong support for the auto-negotiation function utilizing media speed and full-/half-duplex protocol selection. Due to the built-in wave-shaping filter, the DM9161A does not need any external filters to transport signals to the media in 100M or 10M Ethernet operations. Through the Media Independent Interface (MII), the DM9161A connects to the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer, ensuring a high inter-oparability among products from different vendors. The DM9161A uses a low-power and high-performance 2.5V CMOS process with integrated 3.3V to 2.5V voltage regulator and 5V tolerant I/Os.
It contains the entire physical layer functions of 100BASE-Tx as defined by IEEE802.3u:
- Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS)
- Physical Medium Attachement (PMA)
- Twisted Pair Physical Medium Dependent Sublayer (TP-PMD)
- 10Base-TX Encoder/Decoder (ENC/DEC)
- Twisted Pair Media Access Unit (TPMAU)
The power-down mode, selectacle 1:1 or 1.25 :1 TX-driver allows further savings in power consumption.
