DM9161A: 10/100 Fast Ethernet Physical Layer TX/FX Single Chip Transceiver
The DM9161A is a physical-layer single chip low power transceiver for 10Base-T, 100Base-TX and 100FX operations. It supports HP´s Auto MDI-X technology. Patch and cross cables can automatically be twisted/untwisted. The identical PHY Core is also being used in the MAC/PHY Controllers DM9000A and DM9010.
It provides a strong support for the auto-negotiation function utilizing media speed and full-/half-duplex protocol selection. Due to the built-in wave-shaping filter, the DM9161A does not need any external filters to transport signals to the media in 100M or 10M Ethernet operations. Through the Media Independent Interface (MII), the DM9161A connects to the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer, ensuring a high inter-oparability among products from different vendors. The DM9161A uses a low-power and high-performance 2.5V CMOS process with integrated 3.3V to 2.5V voltage regulator and 5V tolerant I/Os.
It contains the entire physical layer functions of 100BASE-Tx as defined by IEEE802.3u:
- Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS)
- Physical Medium Attachement (PMA)
- Twisted Pair Physical Medium Dependent Sublayer (TP-PMD)
- 10Base-TX Encoder/Decoder (ENC/DEC)
- Twisted Pair Media Access Unit (TPMAU)
The power-down mode, selectacle 1:1 or 1.25 :1 TX-driver allows further savings in power consumption.

Single PHY Transceivers
Davicom´s single-port PHY series are low power Physical Layer Transceiver in LQFP-48 and QFN-32/24 packages. They are fully compliant to IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u 10Base-T / 100 Base-TX and ANSI X3T12 TP-PMD 1995 standards.
The front-end can drive 10Base-T, 100Base-TX TP-transformer and FX-transceiver. Available Interfaces for connection to MAC layer chips, switches or microcontrollers with integrated MAC are MII, RMII and SNI/GPSIAn integrated wave filter saves external filters for the signal forwarding in 100Base-TX or 10Base-T modes.
DM9162, DM9163 and DM9111A can internally generate the 50MHz reference clock or alternatively use use the external 50MHz system clock. DM9163 additionally offers 8kV Isolation Voltage and 3.3V transformer central tap as well as a BIST (Built-in-self-test) function.
DM9111A is the most cost effective PHY due to the 0,11µ manufacturing process. It also has the lowest current consumption because the signals are transferred by voltage instead of current. Additional power saving modes were added.

DM9161B: 10/100 Mbit MDI-X Fast Ethernet PHY Transceiver
The DM9161B is a physical layer, single-chip, and low power transceiver for 100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T operations. It supports HP´s Auto MDI-X feature and is available in commercial and industrial temperature range.
On the media side, it provides a direct interface either to Unshielded Twisted Pair Category 5 Cable (UTP5) for 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet, or UTP5/UTP3 Cable for 10BASE-T Ethernet. Through the Media Independent Interface (MII), the DM9161B connects to the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer, ensuring a high interoperability from different vendors.
